# What is an AI agent?

> An AI agent is software that uses an AI model — usually a large language model — to reach a goal by deciding what to do next and taking actions through tools such as APIs, databases, email or a CRM. It keeps context in memory and works within rules and approvals you define.

## What are the parts of an AI agent?

| Model | Understands language and decides the next step (for example GPT, Claude or Gemini). |
| Instructions | The agent's role, goals, tone and rules. |
| Tools | Actions it can take: search, read a database, create a ticket, send a message, book a meeting. |

| Memory | What has happened so far in the conversation or task. |
| Guardrails | Limits, approvals, logging and hand-off to people. |

## What types of AI agents are there?

- **Conversational agents** — talk with customers or staff on a website, WhatsApp or by voice.
- **Task agents** — complete a defined job such as processing an invoice or updating records.
- **Research agents** — collect and summarise information from approved sources.
